The Comets second game of the season was following on from a decisive 6-0 win against Solent Amazons. The Comets were obviously hoping to continue their winning streak (of one!) as they met Coventry Phoenix for the first time this season.
The Comets knew it would be a more physical game and Coventry didn't disappoint which meant the Comets took a little time to find their feet. However, they couldn't be kept off the scoreboard with the first goal coming from #98 Leah Cannon assisted by #19 Liz Shackley. This was followed in the last minute of the first period by a goal from #15 Liv Taylor assisted by #87 Mya Harewood.
After a stern talking to from Captain Jordan Phipps in the period break about taking no penalties the second period was dominated by penalties for the Comets as the Phoenix attempted to fight back. #26 Jordan Phipps sat for two concurrent minors but the Phoenix couldn't take advantage. Coventry then had a series of penalties as well as the game became chippier with both sides fighting for every inch of ice. We then finished the second period with a final penalty for #19 Liz Shackley but no goals from either team.
The third period saw the first and only goal from Coventry Phoenix but it was swiftly answered by an unassisted beauty from #27 Amy Cannon which hit the back of the net satisfyingly after a few earlier attempts that had hit crossbar. #15 Liv Taylor got a second goal of the game assisted by #87 Mya Harewood and #10 Rachel Miles. The game nearly got to the end without any further penalties but in the last two minutes #87 Mya Harewood took a tripping penalty and Coventry also had another minor. The Comets took advantage of the brief 5 on 4 situation and the last goal of the game was a shorthanded one from #98 Leah Cannon assisted by #27 Amy Cannon. This was especially poignant for the Cannons as this was Leah's last game for the Comets.
Player of the Game went to #87 Mya Harewood who impressed with her speed and stick handling around the opposition and Spirit of the Game went to #16 Beth Thomas for an impressive effort.
With the second game of the season finished the Comets were pleased to finish with another win and continue their streak. Leah Cannon certainly shone in her last game for the Comets with the first and last goal of the game as she heads back to Canada. We know the whole team and fans will miss Leah so many thanks and good luck!
This was also #39 Mackenzie McNamara's first game back in net after a short break. We know everyone except our opponents will welcome back Wonderwall Kenz!
