The Cardiff Comets welcomed the Peterborough Phantoms onto home turf for a thrilling game of hockey. The last clash had been a 7-0 win for the Comets and the Phantoms came back fighting. The first period saw the teams raising up and down the ice with neither team able to take a clear advantage although both teams had quality shots on net. The first goal came 11 minutes in when Meg Lawrence and Liv Taylor displayed their near telepathic teamwork with a wrist shot from Meg Lawrence flying straight into the top shelf of the net. A few minutes later Leah Cannon was called for tripping but the Phantoms were kept in their own zone with the Comets clearing the puck. Another tripping penalty was called on the Comets as Kim Bosher went to the box but the Comets denied the Phantom's offensive attempts.
The second period was even faster paced as the Comets kept up the pressure and Gemma Kellond's shot was quickly converted into a goal by Liz Shackley when it bounced off the Phantoms' goalie's pads. Another attempt from Shackley narrowly avoided going in as the Comets kept up the pressure. The Phantoms fought back with a goal in the 31st minute but in the last two minutes of the period a face off in the Phantoms' zone won by Leah Cannon was sent straight into the net by Amy Cannon's lightning quick shot.
The third period extended the Comets' lead with a goal from Liv Taylor assisted by Rachel Miles, then two more goals from Gemma Kellond assisted by Liv Taylor and Leah Cannon bringing the final score to 6-1. Spirit of the game went to Liz Shackley of the Comets and Caitlin Barraclough of the Phantoms. Meanwhile Player of the Game went to Gemma Kellond of the Comets for her impressive performance and Hana Malachowski of the Phantoms.
A special shoutout goes to Jordan Phipps, beloved captain of the Comets, as she celebrated her birthday.
The Cardiff Comets now face Slough Sirens two games in a row to finish the season. Our next game is in the Vindico arena on the 11th May for what should be an exciting final home game of the 2023/24 season.
